3rd International Black Sea Symposium

The International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS) will host the 3rd International Black Sea Symposium on “The Black Sea Region in Flux” at Hotel Danae in Aegina , from 29 June – 4 July 2010 . The 3rd International Black Sea Symposium is made possible through the support of 14 international sponsors and partners.

Fourty young professionals including diplomats, academics, civil society leaders and researchers will participate in the event. They come from 20 countries including those of the Black Sea region, EU member states, the United States , Australia and Uzbekistan . The event’s working language is English.

The four-day intensive course starts with two days of sessions where international experts present issues of importance for the Black Sea region. Topics include security concerns and economic development, as well as the role of key stakeholders like NATO, Russia and the EU. During the second part of the programme, expert facilitator Prof. Benjamin J. Broome ( Arizona State University , Tempe , USA ) will lead workshops on conflict resolution.

The 25 prominent speakers and guests include former Foreign Minister of Georgia, Amb. Tedo Japaridze , former Foreign Minister of Romania, Amb. Sergiu Celac and former Minister of Economy of Georgia, Dr. Vladimer Papava. Top level analysts Dr. F. Stephen Larrabee (RAND Corporation, Washington DC ), Prof. Alina Mungiu-Pippidi (Hertie School of Governance, Berlin) and Dr. Andrei Zagorski ( MGIMO University , Moscow ) will also be presenting. Mr. Panagiotis Koukoulis, Mayor of Aegina and Mr. Georgios Tsatiris, President of the Municipal Council of Aegina will give a welcome address.

About the project: the International Black Sea Symposium project was launched in 2008 with the aim of contributing to dialogue, cooperation and understanding in the Black Sea region and beyond. It does so by providing a forum for study and networking in a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment to young professionals and international experts.
